With End of School Year excitement ending and our Family Road Trip completed it is time to settle into a summer routine. We have about 56 days left of Summer Vacation and it will be over before we know it. Our school did offer a free Summer Camp this year, but it fell right in the middle of our plans to visit extended family out of state. The kids did get signed up for some summer activities, but we are still coming out of COVID lockdowns and we have had to adjust plans for our pre-COVID normal summertime.

This year, we have a goal of a daily routine that includes time for fun, unstructured time and lessons to help regain academic momentum that was lost during a year of on-line learning. Montessori education has always appealed to me and I have started educating myself on this approach. With that in mind, I decided to divide the day up into 3 hour chunks and spread activities throughout the day. This will give us a little more flexibility so I don't start stressing about keeping to a routine and being a "perfect mom."

So what will our day look like? Here's the plan:

First Period 6AM-9AM

  • Wake up

  • Care of Self (get dressed, brush teeth, hair brushed and styled, etc.)

  • Breakfast

  • Care of Living Things (pets have food and fresh water, indoor plants watered)

  • Gardening Activities

  • Learning Activities-Cosmic Studies (experiments and lessons about our universe and Montessori Great Lessons)

Second Period 9AM-12PM

  • Snack (done independently)

  • Practical Life/Care of Home (aka:Chores)

  • Mathematics Activities

  • Geography Activities

Third Period 12PM-3PM

  • Lunch

  • Quiet Time (nap, yoga, meditate, read book of choice, draw)

  • Language Arts Activities

  • History Activities

Fourth Period 3PM-6PM

  • Snack

  • Art, Music, and Movement Activities (get out of the house time!)

Fifth Period 6PM-9PM

  • Family Dinner Time

  • Practical Life/Care of Home

  • Bedtime Routines

  • Family Reading Time (I read a chapter book to the kids)

It will be interesting to see how this goes and fun to learn more about Montessori Education, which is very much child lead. Stay tuned for some of our learning activities!
